The Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat
If you’re looking for a relaxing way to experience the beauty of central Pennsylvania, a cruise aboard the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat should be at the top of your list. After spending two years in dry dock for repairs and navigating challenges from low river levels, this beloved riverboat is set to return for the 2026 season — just in time for your next getaway to B.F. Hiestand House. Our guests will find it’s an easy trek north to Harrisburg to catch a riverboat ride, and worthwhile excursion that adds a little something special to any summertime visit.
Docked at City Island in Harrisburg, this authentic stern-driven paddlewheel riverboat feels like a step back in time. Built in 1988 by the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society, the Pride was designed as a replica of the grand riverboats that once carried passengers and goods along America’s waterways in the 1800s. With its classic red-and-white exterior, wooden decks, and working paddlewheel, it looks like it drifted straight out of a Mark Twain novel. Even more impressive, it’s one of only a handful of authentic paddlewheel riverboats still operating in the United States — and the only one of its kind on this side of the Mississippi River. Since its maiden voyage almost four decades ago, the Pride has carried over a million passengers, giving them a river experience like no other.
Once you step aboard, the pace slows in the best possible way. The riverboat glides along the Susquehanna River, offering wide-open views of the Harrisburg skyline and the surrounding natural landscape. The Pride’s upper deck is perfect for catching a summer breeze and spotting wildlife: Keep an eye out for eagles, herons, and even the occasional river otter. Down below, the enclosed main salon provides a comfortable, air-conditioned space with large windows, so you won’t miss a thing.
The Pride offers a variety of cruises from May through October, making it easy to find an experience that fits your vacation schedule. The 45-minute public sightseeing cruise is a great introduction, complete with a narrated overview of the river’s history, ecology, and role in shaping the region. If you’re in the mood for something a little more immersive, there are themed cruises that turn a simple boat ride into a memorable evening. “Jazzin’ on the Pride” pairs a two-hour cruise with live jazz music, while the Sunset Dinner Cruise features a three-course meal served as the sky changes color over the water. For something interactive, the Murder Mystery Dinner Cruise invites guests to solve a whodunit alongside professional actors. There’s even “Sips on the Susquehanna,” where you can sample craft beers while taking in the view.
A few helpful tips can make your visit even smoother. Cruises run rain or shine, so it’s worth checking the weather and dressing accordingly. Boarding typically begins about 10 minutes before departure, and there’s a cash bar onboard for drinks along with light snacks available for purchase. The riverboat is wheelchair accessible and equipped with restrooms, making it comfortable for a wide range of guests. Members of the military (active, reserve, or retired) can enjoy the experience free of charge.
A cruise on the Pride of the Susquehanna offers a refreshing change of pace and a unique glimpse of the river’s timeless beauty. While you’re in Harrisburg, we suggest you also check out the Pennsylvania State Capitol or take in a Harrisburg Senators baseball game. After your adventure, settle into your cozy accommodations at B.F. Hiestand House, just off the banks of the Susquehanna in Marietta, where the spirit of the river lingers long after your cruise.
